Nathan Johnson writes alternative folk music with a heartbeat of a hardworking acoustic guitar, a sound his friends call "vibey grit," like darkness looking for light. His songs inhabit the space between plainspoken Americana storytelling and the mythic imagery of folklore, exploring themes of grief, restoration, and spiritual seeking. His music is heavily influenced by the landscapes and natural environments of the places he's called home, particularly the peculiar blend of Rocky Mountain ruggedness and high-desert mystery characteristic of his current home base of Northern Colorado.
After many years of writing songs in private, he released his debut single "Leaving" in 2024, a song drawing on outlaw country influences while still leaving room to grow for his sound. His follow-up release, "Something Here," brought the energy of a concept album to a seven-minute single, an experiment closer to prog rock than folk and drawing comparisons to artists as diverse as Pink Floyd, Lord Huron, and Nirvana.
Nathan is a finalist in the inaugural "It's All About the Song" Songwriting Competition at the 2026 Whitefish Songwriter Festival. In addition to his own music, Nathan is also the guitarist for Questionable Decisions, a contemporary contra dance trio, and Cèilidh, a Scottish folk-rock four-piece. He is currently producing his first original EP, a studio collaboration with artists who have worked with Billy Failing, Frail Talk, and other emerging names in the acoustic indie folk world.
